Don Drummond
member of Santa Rosa Art Guild
Art and science competed for Don's interest during his schooldays in Scotland. Science won and for the next 45 years his attention was focused on a career in chemistry and chemical patents, first in Britain and then in Germany. But all this time, he was quietly painting and drawing, in the hope that someday, somewhere, he might become . . . an artist! Now, in California, the dream has come true.

Don currently works exclusively in pastel, his "first love", and also in acrylic. For him, the charm of pastel lies in the vibrant colors, the subtle shades, the ease of application and the immediacy with which the most varied effects can be produced. Don's fascination with acrylic stems from the apparently endless possibilities of this modern medium, which lends itself to the most diverse techniques, from delicate washes to the thickest impasto

Don's favorite subject is landscape, including towns and villages. He is intrigued, in his words, by "the transforming effects of light and atmosphere on fields, trees, water and old stone walls - early morning mists, the glare of midday, long afternoon shadows and the last glimmer of light before night falls". However, he does create the occasional still life or flower study and sometimes ventures into the realms of imagination and the abstract.

Don has attended classes and workshops in Britain, Germany and in USA. His paintings and drawings have found an honored place in many private collections, both in Europe and in USA and have been purchased by one international organization that, in 1997, staged an exhibition of his work.

My work can be seen at the Upstairs Art Gallery, 306 Center Street, Healdsburg, California.
